Specifically, the authors offer a four-year analysis of Black men's representation on football and basketball teams versus their representation in the undergraduate student body on each campus. The report concludes with recommendations for the NCAA and commissioners of the six major sports conferences, college and university leaders, coaches and athletics directors, journalists, and Black male student-athletes and their families

    Inductive Reasoning Games as Influenza Vaccination Models: Mean Field Analysis

    We define and analyze an inductive reasoning game of voluntary yearly vaccination in order to establish whether or not a population of individuals acting in their own self-interest would be able to prevent influenza epidemics. We find that epidemics are rarely prevented. We also find that severe epidemics may occur without the introduction of pandemic strains. We further address the situation where market incentives are introduced to help ameliorating epidemics. Surprisingly, we find that vaccinating families exacerbates epidemics. However, a public health program requesting prepayment of vaccinations may significantly ameliorate influenza epidemics.Comment: 20 pages, 7 figure

    The problem considered in this report is that of reducing actual geometrical area of fin-cooling surface, which is, of course, not uniform in temperature, to equivalent cooling area at one definite temperature, namely, that prevailing on the cylinder wall at the point of attachment of the fin. This makes it possible to treat all the cooling surface as if it were part of the cylinder wall and 100 per cent effective. The quantities involved in the equations are the geometrical dimensions of the fin, thermal conductivity of the material composing it, and the coefficient of surface heat dissipation between the fin and the air streams

    Fractional processes: from Poisson to branching one

    Fractional generalizations of the Poisson process and branching Furry process are considered. The link between characteristics of the processes, fractional differential equations and Levy stable densities are discussed and used for construction of the Monte Carlo algorithm for simulation of random waiting times in fractional processes.     1. The rate of elongation and thickening of individual branches (shoots) varies across plant species. This variation is important for the outcome of competition and other plant-plant interactions. Here we compared rates of shoot growth across 44 species from tropical, warm temperate, and cool temperate forests of eastern Australia.2. Shoot growth rate was found to correlate with a suite of traits including the potential height of the species, xylem-specific conductivity, leaf size, leaf area per xylem cross-section, twig diameter (at 40 cm length), wood density and modulus of elasticity.3. Within this suite of traits, maximum plant height was the clearest correlate of growth rates, explaining 50 to 67% of the variation in growth overall (p p 4.     Method of studying the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for the superconducting vortex lattice state

    In this paper, we present a method to construct the eigenspace of the normal-state electrons moving in a 2D square lattice in presence of a perpendicular uniform magnetic field which imposes (quasi)-periodic boundary conditions for the wave functions in the magnetic unit cell. An exact unitary transformations are put forward to correlate the discrete eigenvectors of the 2D electrons with those of the Harper's equation. The cyclic-tridiagonal matrix associated with the Harper's equation is then tridiagonalized by another unitary transformation. The obtained eigenbasis is utilized to expand the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for the superconducting vortex lattice state, which showing the merit of our method in studying the large-sized system.     Effective Use of Case Studies in the MIS Capstone Course through Semi-Formal Collaborative Teaching

    This paper provides the theoretical grounding for the development of an instrument to assess the effectiveness of the case study approach in teaching the higher-level concepts associated with the MIS capstone course. The instrument was administered to students in the capstone class over three semesters. The resulting findings from the survey, combined with an understanding of each instructor’s approach to teaching case studies are then used collaboratively by the instructors as a means to identify strengths and areas for improvement. Items in the survey were developed from applicable prior research on teaching and learning and collaborative teaching. Responses to the survey items were subjected to an exploratory factor analysis, resulting in two dimensions of interest – teaching substance and teaching technique. The results of the survey indicate widespread satisfaction by students with the case study approach
